Help

We hope that the design of the site will make it as easy as possible for anyone to navigate around the site. However, we do recognise that the more help that is available, the better. Please do contact us if you have any comments on the site or thoughts as to how it may be improved.

Moving around the site

There are a number of ways in which you can move around our site:

  • You will always find a navigation column on the left-hand side of each screen. Click on any term to be taken to that area. The navigation column will highlight whichever area you are in, so that you can tell your whereabouts on the site and a 'crumb-trail' is shown at the top of the content area
  • Each main subject area within the site has a mini home page for that area, where you will find more detail on the topics covered in that area.
  • Use our Site map to see all the key areas of the site on one page. You can then click on your chosen topic to be taken to that area.
  • You may be shown links to other pages, both on our site and elsewhere on the web. Such links are shown by having a word underlined, as is usually the case with web sites.
  • The third main method of finding material on our site is to use the Search button.

Search tips

A search box always appears at the top left of the screen. Simply type a term in the box and click on Search. You should get a list of pages as your results. You can click on the page title to go to that page.

A trick when looking at a list is to hold down the shift key when clicking on a title. This opens the link in a new Window. You can simply close the Window when you're done and still have the search results easily available.

You can search for any term simply by typing it in, but here are some tips for more advanced searching:

  • The search automatically truncates your search term, so searching on teacher will also find the term teachers
  • To broaden a search, separate your search terms with OR. So teacher  OR stress will find any mention of teacher(s) as well as any mention of stress.
  • To narrow a search, separate your search terms with AND. So teacher AND stress will find any mention of teacher(s) and any mention of stress  in the same page.
  • To search on a phrase, enclose the phrase in quotation marks ”teacher stress”
  • To search just on the displayed page, click on the page, hit Control-F on your keyboard and type in your term. It should be highlighted on the screen.

Printing

You can print off any page you wish at any time using the normal print function of your internet browser. You can also select text and images from this print screen for copy-and-pasting into other application.

Downloading

Occasionally on the site, we suggest that you download a document rather than read all of it on screen. Some material is simply not suitable for looking at on a computer screen, or it may be a form for you to complete, a sample brochure, or similar type of document.

If you do not wish, or for some reason you are not able to download these documents, please use our materials order form and we will post the requested document to you.

Virtually all the material we offer for downloading is in Adobe Acrobat format, as this is the web standard for such documents. If you don’t have the Adobe Acrobat Reader software necessary to view the documents, you can download it from  www.adobe.com  or you can usually find it on the cover CD of most computer or internet magazines.

We may offer some downloads in Microsoft Word format. You should be aware that all Microsoft products are a target for viruses and bugs of various kinds. All material posted on the site has been virus checked, but you should re-check any Word download, just to make sure.

We always put the file size near or next to the icon. It is very difficult to say how long a document will take to download, as there are so many variables. The better your connection, the faster the download. If you think that the download is taking too long, stop and start again. Other variables include how busy your machine is, and how busy our server is too, and the format of the file.

Linking

We have a formal links policy which you can download (PDF-55kb). We are happy to accept links to our site provided it is to www.governorline.info only. No deep linking please. We would be grateful for a courtesy e-mail to Worklife Support if you do want to set up a link.
