New Advice Line offering professional support for all 370,000 governors in England
-
£165,000 funding from the Department for Education and Employment
On Tuesday 9 January 2001, GovernorLine (08000 722 181) the new advice line will become available to all 370,000 governors in England. Recognising the important and demanding role governors play in every school across the country, the new service will offer information and professional support across all aspects of school life.
The role of governing bodies has grown under successive governments. Setting a school’s strategic direction, budgets, disciplinary procedures, and inclusion strategies for example, all require specific skills and expertise. Staffed by experienced governors and supported by legal, financial, employment, and health and safety experts, GovernorLine will be a source of assistance and guidance on all governing issues.
The new service is fully supported by the National Governors Council (NGC), the National Association of Governors and Managers (NAGM), and is funded by the DfEE. GovernorLine will provide immediate support for governors in raising standards of achievement in schools and complements other moves the DfEE is taking to ensure governing bodies are best placed to fulfil their vital role.
Chris Gale, Chair of NGC will say, “Governors have responsibilities that require considerable skills and expertise. GovernorLine provides the support and advice governors deserve and recognises the important part governors play in providing our children with a first class education.”
John Adams, Chairman of NAGM will say, “GovernorLine is an essential addition to the support structures currently available to all governors in England. The Government, teachers, governors, parents, and society all want to see an education system that thrives and meets the challenges faced by our future generations. The new service will guarantee that the contribution made by governors is a source of inspiration for education in all of our schools.”
